Discoverer of hot springs

This bronze work represents a donkey frolicking in the hot springs of the island of A Toxa. In this way, the wishes of Mrs. Emilia Pardo Bazán have been fulfilled, when in 1899 she thought that the discoverer of the hot springs deserved a statue. This fact was remembered in 1920 by Don Wenceslao Fernández Flórez: “We made the statue of the donkey, very large, placed it in a clearly visible place, and put this inscription in gold letters: Ao sole protector of Galicia, the taxpayers and the poor man.”

This sculpture of the donkey, created by Lucas Míguez, is not the only work of this sculptor located in the municipality of O Grove. In the Plaza de Arriba we can also enjoy the Floreano work.
