The first indications that in O Grove food was preserved by means of some type of preservation procedure dating back to Roman age. This is attested by the remains of two salted piñas found in the archaeological site Adro Vello.
Salting and techniques evolved over time until the arrival of Catalan promoters at the end of the XNUMXth century revolutionized the mechanisms used. Higher technology both in factories and in fishing methods gave way to a expansion of salted fish along the entire coast of the Rías Baixas. O Grove is a good example of this. On this small peninsula, at least 25 salted fish were built. A good example of that industry is found in the Salgadeiras de Moreiras, a museum space focused on the dissemination of the life and work of Galician fishermen and located in Punta Moreiras.
Subsequently, the mechanisms evolved until the creation in 1879 of the first industrialized canning de Galicia, located on the Illa de Arousa. Today the canning industry plays a fundamental role in the development of coastal municipalities such as O Grove.
