The building that we are currently on the island of A Toxa it is not the same one that appears in old photographs, although in essence it is still present.

The Gran Hotel of our days is the work of the Leonese architect Francisco Javier Sanz Martínez. He projected it in the mid-forties of the last century and used part of the structure of the above: it gave it more heights, wrapped it up and simplified it.

If we went inside, we would be surprised by the original imperial style staircase which is still located in the same place where it was placed by the previous architect, Daniel Vázquez-Gulias Martínez from Ourense. He was the one who designed the first Hotel that was officially inaugurated in the summer of 1908.

We are sure that you did not know that you are before the first Resort in Spain and one of the first in Europe, as we understand it today, which had a golf course – the fourth built in Spain – and the first linked to a Hotel. A spa complex where the Gran Hotel placed the name of the island of A Toxa in the Michelin Guide on a par with other prestigious establishments such as the Palace or the Ritz in Madrid and boasting the not inconsiderable fortune of being the 2nd most-recommended Spanish hotel establishment in the Michelin Guide. It takes more than 100 years.

A curiosity: From February 1937 until almost the end of the Spanish civil war, it was used as a military hospital. It suffered extensive structural damage during that period.
