REGATTA OF DORNAS

The Asociation “Amigos da Dorna Meca” in collaboration with the Council of O Grove organizes two regattas of dornas within the programming of the Festa do Marisco. Thus, visitors and residents can attend a regatta of dornas sailing that runs through the Arousa estuary and another competition called “Desafío Arousa” where dornas representatives of up to five towns in the estuary face each other “oar” in the regatta field on the beach of Confín-Peralto.

The dorna is a typical boat of the Rías Baixas of approximately 4,50 meters in length and 1,50 meters in beam, with a round prow that sobreshe comes out on deck, her stern flat and small and a pronounced keel. It evolves with the headrope sail and has two support oars for when there is no wind. She generally has two crew members on board, the skipper at the helm and the sailor, who is in charge of hoisting the sail.

La “dorna meca” is a type of boat designed and built in O Grove, common on the coasts of the Rías Baixas until the 60s. It was built from 10 or 12 quarter keels up to 18 and in the past they were manned by 3 or 4 men. At the end of the 80s, the recovery work began on this boat, which had been missing for 30 years.
