Sculpture made by Alfonso Vilar in 1.970. Important figure in the town of Sanxenxo and first Galician aviator. Joseph Piñeiro Gonzalez aka the “Galician bird-man”, was born in o Seixo (Mugardos, La Coruña) on December 15, 1878. In the summer of 1911 he had the opportunity to witness the first flight that took place in Galicia, on the occasion of the Pilgrim’s festivities, in which several French aviators carry out exhibition exercises. Piñeiro He is so impressed by this unusual spectacle that he decides to sell his factory and move to Pau (France), where the aviator Bleriot runs his famous pilot school. In an intensive course of a few days he obtains the title of aviation pilot. With 30.000 pesetas he buys a plane from the brand “Bleriot”, 50 HP, return to Sanxenxo and prepare the pitch Baltar to practice their flights. The arrival in Sanxenxo was tremendous and after breaking the news to the Galician press, Sanxenxo becomes a center of attraction for the curious of its flights sobre the beach of Baltar. His was very famous “flight of the seagull” which consisted of touching the surface of the sea with the wings of the aircraft.
